Welcome to the Sparkly Doula! *
I work with you to make sure you understand the options for an end of life journey and help you to work through the decisions about what you want and need.
I can provide as much or as little support as you need.
My approach is respectful of individual views and circumstances, and I try to give people a sense of empowerment over their own decisions and ways of thinking about their community and relationships.
Death is an unavoidable part of life, usually bringing grief and often stress. My hope is that a deeper acceptance of and comfort around death and dying leads to a more connected and caring society.
Doula is the greek word for slave/servant
Modern doulas serve people as non-clinical advocates, providing practical and emotional support. We do not have medical or clinical training, but specialise in understanding the resources and issues around the end of life journey.
Doulas are not just for the dying
Supporting a loved one at end of life can be hard
We don’t usually feel able to be honest about our feelings with someone who is dying because we think they just need our support. And people who are dying often feel that being honest is unfair to their family and friends.
I work to support individuals and communities going through an end of life journey… not just the dying person but also the people around them who may also need extra practical and/or emotional support.
In addition to being a sounding board, I can also provide practical support and advice and assist with finding other services and supports as required.
How I can help
-
I work to make sure that everyone involved with an end of life journey understands the information, options, and choices available. I can help facilitate access to resources and other services.
I can also assist with organising legal documents including advance care directives, emotional wills, funeral planning and legacy documents.
I can provide as much or as little support as you need.
-
If you have been diagnosed with a life-limiting condition (including old age!) I can provide practical and emotional support for you and your loved ones as you navigate the journey to end of life.
This can be anything from tea and a chat to taking you to medical appointments and helping to set up and manage a care schedule. I can also help with navigating the health system, the planning and coordination of services and support networks.
Each situation is unique and I work with you to set up the best support package for your needs.
-
I work with people to put together memory/legacy books. These can help a person who is dying to leave behind their story or a collection of thoughts and advice for their families as a legacy, or it might be a photo and tribute book for someone who is dying or who has died.
Having had a long career in graphic design, memory books are an important part of my doula work, allowing people to leave a legacy for those following or to celebrate their dead or dying person.
Each book is unique and serves it’s own purpose.
-
I can help you decide what the after death experience looks like for your community.
I am always happy to work with funeral directors or celebrants to design the perfect way to honour your person.
It is important to me to help people plan for an end of life that is meaningful to them and consisten with their belief system and ethnic, cultural, spiritual and personal values and preferences.
I can also design bespoke booklets and keepsakes for ceremonies of all types.
-
I am happy to host death chats for groups or individuals who are interested in talking about death and don’t know where to start!
This can be a formal structured presentation style event or an informal chat with interested family and friends.
